Marcy's Diner in Portland, Monday at Noon

Welcome to the photo series Eater Scenes, where Eater photographers visit some of the state's notable spots to capture them at a certain point in the day.

Marcy's Diner was once known for their big, buttery, house made, grilled muffins. But now, owner Darla Neugebauer has become infamous for her reaction to a screaming child. After getting attention from the Boston Globe, The New York Times, and other internationally read publications, the diner's Yelp rating has dropped a half-star from outraged patrons posting negative reviews.

Her comments to Eater before the controversy tells a very different story. Neugebauer said that she's been "living the dream" since she took over the establishment four years ago. "You've got to love what you do to work 18-hour days and not complain," she commented just a few days before her long rant on Facebook.

Check out Neugebauer and her crew serving up lunch on a quiet weekday in the photos above.

Open Wednesday to Monday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
