Serving the community in Scarborough for over 20 years and helping pioneer the organic and natural foods movement, Lois' Natural Marketplace opened its second location in Portland's East End today. Owners Lois and Dan Porta are offering 10% off all sales at the new store for the day. Stop in for groceries, baked goods, and meals to go.
The area is flush with such natural grocers, including the Portland Food Co-op, Whole Foods, and two nearby Rosemonts, but Lois told The Forecaster she doesn't see any of these as competition: "I think we're all helping each other to build (stronger resources) to support farmers and the community ... we're here to complement each other." It seems that with markets as with farming, diversification is a powerful strategy.
47 India Street, Portland, (207) 210-6500, website. Open Monday to Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
