In its announcement that OTTO Pizza will be opening a new location at the renovated Andy's Handy Store in Yarmouth later this year, the Press Herald predicts a pizza war. "The arrival of Otto Pizza will leave the town of 8,400 residents with four pizzerias within one mile of one another," the paper explains.
One of the existing three is directly next door to the OTTO's planned space, and You Wanna Pizza Me owner/chef Ed Horvath isn't happy that the local chain seems to want a piece of him. He told the Press Herald, "I really don't think it's right for them to put a pizza shop next to a pizza shop."
A study published recently by the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that from 2003 to 2010, American kids were consuming less fast food, including pizza. Yarmouth pizzerias, including Route 1 restaurants Pat's Pizza and Romeos, may indeed feel the squeeze of increased competition.
