Former Customer to Reopen Iconic Don's Lunch Van in Westbrook

Will the eats remain cheap?

Westbrook icon Don's Lunch Van will live on in the hands of new owner and former customer Craig Bernier, according to a post yesterday on the company's Facebook page. The cheap eats institution was shut down last month as owner Jim Richards owed the state $4,400 in sales tax. Bill and Nancy Bombard, who bought the business from Richards' parents in 2001 and later sold it back to Richards, reacquired the van when it was shuttered.

The Press Herald has more information, including the fact that Bernier bought the truck for an unspecified sum less than the asking price of $25,000. The new owner will rehab the vehicle and find a new Westbrook lot in which to park it once it's ready. No word yet on if he will also maintain the ludicrously low prices of the original business, which didn't appear to cover costs.

If you're kicking yourself for missing out on the opportunity to take your cooking skills mobile, Portland Food Map has a list of additional food trucks for sale, including Small Axe Truck, the El Rayo airstream, and one of the Wicked Good Truck vehicles.
