One off-peninsula delicatessen falls, another rises. Even as Full Belly Deli struggled futilely to hold on in a strip mall to the west of downtown Portland, Peter Sueltenfuss was planning Otherside Delicatessen to the northeast, in the former home of G Quattrucci's Variety at 164 Veranda Street.
Sueltenfuss has a solid local food background, having worked at Grace, Fore Street, Miyake, District, and Rosemont. While he was head chef at Grace, he won 2013's Chopped Challenge, a local take on the Food Network show Chopped.
The deli opened held a soft opening for lunch yesterday, announcing on Facebook, "Doors open at 11 for lunch!!! Hot soups & sandwiches are ready for this snowy day!!" Sueltenfuss plans to butcher and cure local meats on-site for use in sandwiches and other prepared foods — he recently smoked bacon, both regular and Canadian versions. There are plans for pizza, pasta, beer, wine, and more. Otherside will be open Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
