For fans of cheap eats in downtown Westbrook, it's been a long time coming, but iconic Don's Lunch Van is finally ready to relaunch under new ownership on Friday, December 4 at 4 p.m. Look for it with an updated design at 925 Main Street, near Profenno's Bar and Grill and Friendly's Discount. After the grand opening, normal hours are expected to be Monday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
Craig Bernier, a longtime customer of the roadside staple, purchased the vehicle from previous owners after the business was busted for failing to pay taxes. Everyone loves a good deal, but if your revenue isn't enough to file taxes after you cut a check for employees, it's possible your food is too cheap. Hopefully Bernier, despite his admitted lack of food service experience, has a plan to cover costs.
Though the menu is going back to basics with a concise line-up of hamburgers, hot dogs, Harmon's clam cakes, and fries, a post on Facebook promises a "special new menu item — the Sammy Burger," which isn't currently listed online but seems to share a name with the chef caricature on the side of the van. The note also indicates Bernier has expansion plans in the works. Could a Don's Lunch brick and mortar be on its way?

Correction: a sentence in paragraph two was edited to clarify that the previous owner was indeed paying employees, even while unable to pay taxes.
