UPDATE, 8/30/14: The owners said the opening would be delayed a few days. They declined to give a new date, suggesting that they didn't want to let people down. Keep an eye on this space for updates.
--- After this weekend, locals may wonder how they survived so long without a mash-up of craft beer and arcade machines a la Barcade. Co-owners Dave Aceto and Ben Culver are introducing the concept to their Kickstarter supporters tonight at a private donor event, and a soft opening should start at 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 31. Think the excitement level is high? The bar hasn't even opened yet and it's already on one list of the six best arcade bars in America. Photographer Corey Templeton infiltrated the nostalgia-fueled zone to give you a chance to plot out your quarter allocation. See the pictures below, followed by more details.
In addition to classic stand-up arcade machines and pinball tables, Arcadia will have plenty of board games for groups as well as home consoles hooked up to TVs. Craft beer will be the drink of choice at the bar. A Facebook post announced that local beer will be on all eight taps opening day, including favorites such as Allagash, Bunker, Banded Horn, Bissell Bros., Rising Tide, Gneiss, and Foundation. Culver also brewed a collaboration beer with Foundation Brewing Company this week (don't expect it on opening day). Cocktail fans will not be left out, either; expect video game-themed drinks like "Falcon Punch" and "Jigglypunch."
The menu comprises strictly grilled cheese, and Aceto recently told Eater it "will change as we continue to put new things between bread and cheese and see what we like." Enjoy, just try not to get the buttons all greasy.
Arcadia is at 24 Preble Street in Portland, across the street from Slab. After Sunday's soft opening, regular hours will kick in: Monday to Thursday 4 p.m. to 12 a.m., Friday and Saturday 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
