As announced earlier this month, Rising Tide Brewing Company's four-year anniversary celebration is on Sunday, October 26. A new beer is being brewed for the event, and Bri Warner of Maine Pie Line will bake pies with beer for dessert. Chefs Brad Messier (Rosemont Market Productions) and Matt Brown (Good Shepherd Food Truck) are preparing a special menu featuring a pig and quails raised partially on spent grain from the brewery. A portion of proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Good Shepherd Food Bank in support of its mission to fight hunger in Maine. Tickets go on sale September 1.
Perhaps the highlight of the event will be a a homemade pickle competition open to any attendees who wish to submit entries. A "celebrity" guest panel including Joe Ricchio, Kate McCarty, Jackie Ward, and Eater Maine editor Adam H. Callaghan will judge the entries live, and winners will receive prizes from the brewery. For inspiration, see McCarty's recent Portland Phoenix feature, "Preserve precious produce," or the many posts related to pickling on her blog, The Blueberry Files.
According to the rules set out by Rising Tide, entries must arrive onsite (at the brewery) by 1 p.m. There is no limit on how many entries an attendee can submit. Live judging will take place at 2:30 p.m., followed by the announcement of winners. The grand prize for Best of Show will be a Fox Street Society Membership, and other prizes will be awarded to the winners of each category. The categories are as follows: Best of Show; Best Quick/Vinegar; Best Lacto-Fermented; Best Cucumber; Best Non-Cucumber; Best Sweet; Best Hot; Prettiest. Which ones are your specialties?
