Update, 8/15/14: Fournier says The Farm Stand will open today when it's ready; beyond that, regular hours will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
It's about to get a lot easier to find local meat and produce in South Portland: The Farm Stand opens at 161 Ocean Street on Friday, August 15. The new venture is a collaboration between partners Penny Jordan (of Jordan's Farm), Ben Slayton (of Farmers' Gate Market), and Joe Fournier (formerly of Rosemont Market), who is managing the shop.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the new store is its location near larger grocery stores Hannaford's and Shaw's, as well as Legion Square Market, in the Knightville/Mill Creek area of South Portland. Slayton and Jordan told the Bangor Daily News back in May that they "believe [the other stores] will help The Farm Stand attract shoppers," who may visit The Farm Stand for local goods before rounding out their shopping elsewhere. Tip of the hat to Portland Food Map for the opening date, as well as the info that there will be a small selection of beer and wine, dry goods, and soups and sandwiches to-go "as the market becomes fully operational."
