Whoever bet on three weeks in the office pool, step up to claim your prize: It took exactly that long for Barreled Souls Brewing Company to lose its title of "Maine's newest brewery." Tumbledown Brewing Company in Farmington held its public grand opening on Saturday, August 9.
As reported by the Daily Bulldog, the new brewery, located in the Eastside Mall on Farmington Falls Road, is owned by Matt Swan, a longtime homebrewer making the leap to a professional. As is so often the model for small breweries these days, Tumbledown has a public tasting room where visitors can hang out, interact with the beer makers, purchase samples of the wares, and take fresh beer home in a growler (a large, reusable glass container that can be filled directly from the tap).
Swan responded to a request for comment on Facebook, saying, "The turnout [for the grand opening] was great; over 150 people showed up and enjoyed the beer, music and great food. I was not really sure what to expect—it could have gone either way really and it went really well; I had a pretty big grin on my face for most of the day." (Emphasis added.)
He said people responded positively to the beer, "which is all I could have hoped for, and everyone was pretty impressed with the brewery and 'local' feel it had." When asked what steps are next for the fledgling brewery and its busy owner, Swan explained, "From here I am going to just keep brewing beer, getting more accounts (I just set up my first two tap handles in town at Troll Valley Resort the other day) and keep plugging along and having fun! I am kind of feeling like the 'little brewery that could' now, which is a great feeling."
The tasting room is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. There are also "Dump and Growl" hours every other Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m., which the website clarifies as such: "Come on down, drop off your recycling across the road and get some beer at the same time! What better way to make the dump more enjoyable?"
