Blue Rooster Food Co. guest chef series, week eight: Jason Loring, co-owner/chef of Nosh and newcomer Slab. His creation: "The Apocalypse Dog." A bacon-wrapped hot dog; cheese sauce; pork belly; cherry jam; foie mayo. Get it for $8 starting tomorrow around 5 p.m. and support the Good Shepherd Food Bank.
The dog is an homage to Nosh's Apocalypse Now Burger, made famous by a Portland episode of Man v. Food (whose former host Adam Richman has been causing all sorts of trouble lately). The heart-attack-in-a-bun features two burger patties (four if you upgrade to the quad), two slabs of pork belly, two thick slices of bacon, foie gras, American cheese, macerated cherry spread, and mayonnaise.
Relating the origins of the burger, Loring recalls, "I was working on Nosh at the time, and Man v. Food was huge. Everyone was doing this fuck-you food, so I figured I'd make a fuck-you food too. Apocalypse Now is my favorite movie, and Brando was a man of excess.... I didn't think [Richman] would actually come by. We used to sell maybe two or three a day; after that show aired, we started selling five or six at lunch."
