Look Inside The Bearded Lady's Jewel Box

Photo: Adam H. Callaghan

The Bearded Lady's Jewel Box, Nan'l Meiklejohn's successfully-Kickstarted cocktail bar, probably won't be ready until the end of summer. In the meantime, here's a look at the progress thus far. The picture is taken from the perspective of the mezzanine, the feature Meiklejohn says "made it the spot for me." This upper balcony is accessible from the small, "wonky" original staircase in the back of the bar. There will be a second rail installed on the mezzanine's wide counter so customers won't sit on it.

Much of the alcohol and supplies will be hidden in cabinets or below the bar so that the display will be decorative rather than cluttered. The atmosphere of the room is meant to be voyeuristic; each area is designed to be a distinct vantage point from which to observe the action at the bar and elsewhere. According to Meiklejohn, the chandelier visible in the image doesn't work and will be gone or hidden by the time the Jewel Box opens.
