The King's Head, a new restaurant and bar at 254 Commercial Street in the Pierce Atwood building on Portland's Merrill Wharf, is soft launching with light food today, over half a year later than targeted. Its official opening is planned for tomorrow, Saturday, June 7. Details about the venture, from co-owners Rick Binet--of renowned craft beer bar Blackback Pub & Flyshop in Waterbury, VT--and Justin O'Connor, have been surprisingly scarce, but are now trickling in from a recently-created Facebook page.

The chef has been named: Robert Petzold was executive chef at San Francisco's Bocadillos for about nine years before stepping down last summer.

The restaurant should have 78 seats. Official hours are not yet posted, nor is the time frame for today's soft opening; one source suggests Saturday's official opening will be at 4 p.m. We will update as more information becomes available.
