Central Provisions, situated smack in the middle of the Old Port with entrances on Fore and Wharf streets, opened Tuesday night. With an international small plates concept and a focus on good drinks, Chris Gould's two-floor restaurant/bar is "the proverbial runaway success right out of the gate," according to Maine Sunday Telegram critic John Golden. Golden, usually one to mince words, (sort of) cuts right to the chase in a first look review on his blog: "I could wax poetically about the food, the drink and the ambiance with its nightly asylum of epicurean pretense. But instead I'll not litter this forum with the loquacious totems of purple prose and get right to the point. This is a great place." It has a dining room with an open kitchen surrounded by bar seating on the Fore Street (upper) level, downstairs at the Wharf Street level libations take center stage, with seating at the bar and rails along the walls to accommodate overflow.
