Small Axe Truck, the mobile eatery from chefs Karl Deuben and Bill Leavy, will open for lunch today at 11:30 a.m. at 385 Congress Street, says its Facebook page. Breakfast begins tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. at 122 Anderson Street, right next to Tandem Coffee Roasters and Bunker Brewing in East Bayside (the brewed products of the former will likely be a preferable accompaniment to Small Axe's bagels, omelet sandwiches and hash brown bowls if your next stop is the office).
Small Axe is one of the most exciting additions to the blossoming food truck fleet, given the backgrounds of its chefs, formerly of Hugo's and Miyake, among other fine restaurants. They plan to serve breakfast and lunch during the week at set locations, with weekend hours and locations a bit more flexible. For instance, the truck had a soft opening on Saturday (Portland Food Map was there to check it out), serving breakfast at Anderson Street, then motoring on over to Rising Tide Brewing Company to serve lunch at the brewery's weekly parking lot party.
The lunch menu (in full here) features handpies that elevate the usual food truck offerings. For instance, the cheeseburger handpies come with a Korean twist, as they're served with gouchujang (spicy fermented chili paste) ketchup. The grilled cheese has a roasted tomato jam. There's also an option to create your own rice bowl, with local veggies, a choice of protein, and "curry, sweet & sour or SmallAxe BBQ" sauces.
