In the waning days of August, with not much going on, along comes a bumper crop of new cookbooks to perk us up. First, Portland, Maine Chef's Table - Extraordinary Recipes From Casco Bay by Margaret Hathaway, an impressive collection of stories, recipes and photographs from 49 restaurants and their chefs - most of them in Portland. Jillian Bedell reviewed the book on the From Away blog. On Wednesday, Sept. 5, Hathaway and her husband, Karl Schatz, who took the photos for the book, are launching it with a open-to-the-public event at the Portland Museum of Art, featuring food from five Portland restaurants.
Here's Eater National's massive Fall cookbook preview. There are so many books coming out this Fall, it had to be split into two parts: Part 1 (chefs, restaurants, pastry, international, American) and Part 2 (TV chefs, famous cookbook authors, memoirs, and more). Maine is represented by Standard Baking Co. Pastries, by Alison Pray and Tara Smith (Oct. 16) and Maine Home Cooking: 175 Recipes from Down East Kitchens by Sandra Oliver (Sept. 16).
