Outliers: Restaurant With A View Coming To West End

When it opens in the late fall, as predicted in a detailed Portland Monthly profile, Outliers Eatery will occupy a rare (unique?) position as a West End restaurant with a water view. According to owner Peter Verrill a park across the street from Outliers is protected land, forever allowing a view of the harbor and Casco Bay Bridge. The building was formerly "legendary roughneck hangout" Popeye's Ice House, distinguished by the back half of a small plane stuck into its roof. Transformed now, Outliers has a modern-Maine cottage look outside; the interior is being designed by Denver-based Tivi Design, who also did the dramatic bar area at Grace Restaurant. A chef has not been named, although the top candidate is said to be working in Bar Harbor - not available until after October - and all Verrill will reveal about the food is that there will be an "ever-changing seasonal menu."
